Nobody Won the Enormous Powerball Lottery

A great big pile of money.

If you didn’t win the massive $524 million Powerball jackpot this week, don’t worry: nobody did. But the stakes are higher now. Because nobody won, the jackpot has ballooned up to $700 million, the largest lottery prize in the history of the United States. The odds are in no one’s favor, but $700 million would make for a very comfortable lifestyle.

The winning combination was 47, 2, 63, 62, 11 or 17 for Powerball. The estimated payout would have been a cash value of about $428 million before taxes—not quite $528, but it’s hard to complain when you’re still getting hundreds of millions of dollars. The final winnings would also have been dependent on the tax rate of the winner’s state.

In the last 13 years, 16 winners have come from the state of Pennsylvania, a higher number than in any other place. Powerball is accessible for people in 44 states including Washington, D.C., the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.

Another winning—very winning—number will be drawn on Sunday night, so buy those tickets soon if you’re going to.

In the slight chance that you do win, there are a few steps to take. First, sign the back of the ticket as soon as you’ve realized your astounding good fortune. That way, if you lose the ticket and someone else finds it, they won’t be able to cash it under their own name. A signed ticket and two forms of matching identification are required to claim the ticket.

ABC News recommends that you also stay anonymous, if you can—some states differ on whether or not winners are allowed to remain anonymous or not. There are significant risks in going public with your winnings from robberies to even murders. A lot of things you probably like will change if the people around you know you’ve won the lottery.

Next, think about how you’re going to manage your winnings by getting a management strategy and team in place to help you. With that kind of money, you need someone who can help you figure out how to save it, where to place it, and how to use it. Wait a few months before you even spend any of it—too many people blow through it all at once.

So stay safe out there, and if you do win, think of your neat friends here at Around the Globe News.
