Mike Patterson was hanging out at a lake in Rockmart, GA with his son on June 8th. He dove into the water after he noticed a 4-year old girl trying to stay afloat. Unfortunately, his spinal cord was severed in the process and he was paralyzed from the neck down. After suffering from more medical complications, he was pronounced dead on Friday.
“His life and the lives of others are forever changed by his courageous, split-second decision to save another’s life,” Patterson’s family wrote in a statement.
On the positive side, the girl he saved is okay and her mother expressed her gratefulness to Patterson.
“He’s a God-send basically,” Javaeh’s mom told myfoxatlanta.com. “He was there. He was supposed to have been there.”
Patterson was in between jobs at the time, so be was without health insurance to help cover his injury. This prompted people to set up a trust to raise money for his medical bills. Although he passed away, $90,000 was raised, which is going towards the family.
